What is Heparin?
Heparin is an anticoagulant, or blood thinner, used to prevent blood clots in patients undergoing certain procedures or who have certain medical conditions. The drug was first introduced into clinical practice in the 1930. Heparin is derived from animal products. Its raw ingredient, pig intestines, is produced at a plant in China.
When is Heparin Used?
Heparin is primarily used during kidney dialysis. It is also frequently used for treatment of the following:
- Heart attacks
- Venous blood clots (deep-vein thrombosis)
- Coronary bypass surgery and other cardiac-invasive surgery
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Acute coronary syndrome
- Pulmonary embolism or stroke
- Blood clot prevention in bedridden patients
In early 2008, the main manufacturer of Heparin, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, announced a series of recalls of Heparin due to reports of severe adverse reactions. The active ingredient, manufactured in China, was contaminated with a synthetically created compound that mimics Heparin in certain chemical analyses and can cause serious, and even deadly, adverse reactions among patients. More than 100 deaths have been attributed to contaminated Heparin. The FDA-ordered Heparin recall, as well as high profile news stories such as that of actor Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins being given an overdose of Heparin, and the accidental overdose of other infants, has resulted in lawsuits nationwide.
